other表示“別的，其它的”,它不能單獨使用，后面必須要接可數(shù)名詞的復數(shù)形式。如：

He studies English, math and some other subjects. 他學習英語、數(shù)學和一些別的科目。

這句話中，就算前面沒有some，other后面也只能用復數(shù)形式。

I'll wear my other shoes─these are dirty.

這雙鞋臟了，我要穿別的鞋。

但是再下列情況下，other+單數(shù)名詞

I rang her the other day and she said she'd like to come round

我前幾天給她打電話，她說想過來玩。

The other evening we had a party.

前不久的某個晚上我們搞了一次聚會。

Their food is adequate. It includes meat at least every other day, vegetables and fruit

本句就不止兩個人，但只要是剩下的一個，都使用the other. 當然，我們也可以在the other后面加上名詞boy.

others 表復數(shù)，泛指“別人；別的東西”，它就相當于other+名詞復數(shù)，因此它的后面不能再接名詞。如果句中前面出現(xiàn)了some，后面通常就會用others，即構(gòu)成“Some…others…”的結(jié)構(gòu)， 這時也可以翻譯成“有的……有的……”。如：

（1）Some students are dancing, others are singing. 一些學生在跳舞，其他的在唱歌。

這句話也可以翻譯成“學生們有的在跳舞，有的在唱歌”。Others就相當于other students.

（2）Tom likes helping others. 湯姆喜歡幫助別人。

the others 也表復數(shù), 特指“別人；別的東西”，它相當于the other+名詞復數(shù)，它后面不接名詞。

Others是泛指，而the others是特指，怎么理解呢？如果排除一個不確定的數(shù)量，剩下的就用others，如上面的some students, some就是一個不確定的數(shù)量，所以剩下的數(shù)量也就不確定了，于是就用others來泛指。如果排除一個確定的數(shù)量，剩下的就應(yīng)該用the others來特指。如：

Five students are dancing, the others are singing. 有五個學生在跳舞，其他的在唱歌。

本句中排除的學生是5個，這是一個確定的數(shù)量，于是后面也就用the others 來特指。當然，the others 也可以寫成the other students.

another表三者及以上中的“再一，另一”個，后接單數(shù)名詞。這個單詞本來就是“an other”兩個單詞的連寫，所以它的前面不可能再用上冠詞an. 如：

（1）Have an another cup of coffee, please. 請再喝一杯咖啡。（錯誤，不能用an）

（2）Have another cup of coffee, please.請再喝一杯咖啡。（正確）

本句中如果用the other來代替another, 那意思就暗含這個主人一共只有兩杯咖啡，客人喝了一杯，再請他喝另外的那一杯。意思當然就不對了

another后還可以接“數(shù)詞+名詞復數(shù)”，這時是把“數(shù)詞＋名詞復數(shù)作為一個整體來看待的。如：

She had to stay here for another ten days。她只好又在這兒呆了十天。

本句的意思暗含她原來就在這里已經(jīng)住了若干天了，現(xiàn)在不得不又住一個十天。
